The year 2000 brought collectors an extraordinary treat: World Stamp Expo opened in Anaheim on July 7th with a space exploration theme that pushed the boundaries of stamp design. For the first time ever, the U.S. Postal Service released America's first hologram stamp, first round stamp, first round souvenir sheet, and first 5-sided stamps – all at once.
Well, some sheets came through with the holograms applied wrong…
One error is Scott #3413b, the $11.75 "Landing on the Moon" sheet. This one got hit with the hologram foil twice. There's one where it's supposed to be on the stamp, and then a second strike right next to it. A double application.
After the Expo, a few collectors reported finding hologram placement errors, but not many. Don Sundman kept this one in his personal collection for years and recently decided to make it available so other collectors could enjoy it. This error doesn’t come to market often. The number out there has to be incredibly low.
This error gives you a window into the production challenges of working with hologram stamps for the first time – you can see where things went wrong when they were figuring out the process.
Secure this error in your collection today while still available! Once it’s gone, it is unlikely we'll be able to offer again.
