The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in the world that is still in use. Moreover, it is the first award available to the lower ranks. General George Washington ordered the establishment of a badge of distinction for meritorious action on August 7, 1782. He wrote, "The road to glory in a patriot army is thus open to all." A reprint of this design appeared later in the year.
