Around 1846, Mr. Towle established a local post office in Boston, known as “Towle’s City Post.” Two years later, he took on Mr. Cheever as a partner, changed the name of his delivery service to Cheever & Towle and began producing stamps. They had over 100 boxes placed throughout Boston, where customers could drop their letters with the company’s 2¢ stamp attached. The city post would then deliver the stamp to the address on the letter.
