Bronislau "Bronko" Nagurski was born on November 3, 1908, in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada, and went on to play college football at the University of Minnesota, earning All-American honors in three seasons at two different positions, tackle and fullback. He joined the Chicago Bears as a fullback in 1930, where he became one of the league's most formidable offensive players during his nine seasons with the team. Nagurski also built a successful career as a professional wrestler alongside his football career, a path he leaned on more heavily as his football salary shrank during the Great Depression despite his growing fame.

He returned to the Bears for one additional season in 1943 before stepping away from football entirely to focus on wrestling, a career he continued until his retirement in 1960. When the Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted its first class of honorees in 1963, Nagurski was among those selected, cementing his place among the sport's earliest and most celebrated stars.
