The Grand Canyon is America’s largest canyon and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The canyon consists of approximately 1.2 million acres and is larger than the state of Rhode Island. It stretches for 277 miles, is 18 miles across at its widest place, and is more than one mile at its deepest. The world’s tallest skyscrapers would easily fit within the inner gorge of the Grand Canyon.

Elevations within the canyon range from 1,250 to 9,165 feet above sea level. As a result, temperatures in the floor of the canyon may be up to 25 degrees hotter than those at higher elevations. This range creates several climate zones that support a variety of wildlife.

Humans have lived in the Grand Canyon for more than 4,000 years. The Desert Archaic people are believed to be the first inhabitants, followed by the Anasazi and Pueblo Indians. Ruins of adobe houses and pictographs from many cultures are visible within the Grand Canyon.

Members of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado’s 1540 expedition were the first white men to discover the canyon. John Wesley Powell led the first expedition down the Colorado River through the canyon in 1869. Congress declared the area a National Park in 1919.
