This set of five stamps was issued in 2010 to honor beloved American comic strips that have entertained newspaper readers for generations. The stamps were dedicated at The Ohio State University, home of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, and the dedication ceremony was attended by several of the creators and artists behind the featured strips, including Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker and Garfield creator Jim Davis. Comic strips have long told stories through humor, adventure, and sometimes drama, offering a lighter counterpoint to the more serious news found elsewhere in the Sunday paper.
The set includes five distinct designs, each capturing a signature scene from its respective strip. Beetle Bailey, created in 1950, follows a perpetually sleepy Army private who spends his time napping and dodging work, much to the frustration of his commanding sergeant. Calvin and Hobbes centers on a mischievous six-year-old boy and his stuffed tiger companion, who comes to life only in Calvin's imagination. Archie depicts the classic high school love triangle at the heart of the strip since its creation in 1941, showing the title character caught between two competing admirers. Garfield features the lasagna loving, Monday hating house cat who has become one of the most recognized characters in comic strip history, while Dennis the Menace captures the endless mischief of its title character, true to the strip's name.
