Counterfeit US stamps have popped up every now and then throughout postal history, but in 2002, we began to see a noticeable rise in the illegal printing of modern stamps.  At first, it was mainly coil stamps, but in 2016 counterfeit panes and booklets were discovered.  In 2020, misleading advertisements began appearing that offered current stamps at heavily discounted prices to the unsuspecting stamp customer and collector.  For this reason, the USPS recommends only purchasing Forever stamps through their website or other trusted stamp dealer sources.

This is your chance to see counterfeit US stamps up close and compare them to your genuine versions.  The scandal surrounding these stamps makes them all the more interesting to collect.  And, since you won't be using them as postage, you have nothing to fear from owning them.

In March 2022, this counterfeit Wedding Roses stamp was discovered.  It’s one of three counterfeit varieties found of this stamp.

How to Distinguish the counterfeit Wedding Roses stamp from the Real Deal…

  • Genuine has serpentine die cut perforations measuring 11, while the counterfeit’s perforations measure 11 horizontally, but 10.75 vertically.
  • Under shortwave UV light, the fake stamp is brighter than the genuine stamp
  • Paper is whiter
  • “USPS” microprinted is hard to read
  • Date is made of black dots, while the date on the genuine is solid.
