The great expanse of the American Southwest is known for its unrelenting sun, sudden rain-storms, and driving wind. Together, these conditions have formed some of the most majestic landscapes in the country. A distinctive part of the scenery, buttes rise from the desert floor.
Buttes are isolated hills with steep sides and a flat top. Wind and water erosion wore away the softer rock that surrounded them long ago, leaving natural sculptures of deep red color. Since the days before European settlement of the area, Native Americans used the buttes as landmarks to guide them through the desert.
Monument Valley, or Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii in Navajo, is located on the Arizona-Utah border and part of the Navajo Nation’s land. Thousands of visitors travel to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park to experience the awe-inspiring views.
In the 1930s, John Ford filmed his western, Stagecoach, in this valley using the buttes as the backdrop. Since then, the area has become a symbol of the Arizona Old West and has been filmed in many movies and commercials.
When a new day begins, the fog rises up the sheer walls of the buttes, once again revealing their stark beauty.
