Rush to Meet World War I Demands Leads to Color Error
In 1918, US relief agencies and individuals sent food, clothing, machine parts, and valuable Liberty Bonds to war-torn Europe. Printed in orange red and black, the 1918 $2 Franklin (#523) paid the postage for countless heavy packages crossing the Atlantic.
Then in 1920, the $2 Franklin (#547) appeared with a carmine frame. Many thought this was an error. However, an investigation revealed the 1918 stamp was the error. By this time, many of the 60,000 orange red stamps had already been used and discarded. US #547 is scarce by today’s standards as well, with fewer than 800,000 issued.
Get both stamps with seldom-seen fine centering and compare the colors yourself.
