Self-Adhesive
The Postal Service surprised collectors at the Art of Magic first day ceremony in Las Vegas by unveiling this souvenir sheet using lenticular printing, a technique that had never appeared on a US stamp until this release. A clear ridged plastic layer sits over the printed image, and each tiny ridge acts like its own small lens. Tilt or rotate the sheet, and the rabbit appears to pop out of the hat, then vanish back inside, creating real motion out of a still image.
Magic has entertained American audiences for generations, and few illusions are more familiar than a magician reaching into an empty top hat and pulling out a live rabbit. The Art of Magic stamp issue celebrated this classic art form with designs depicting five signature illusions, including the rabbit in the hat, a fortune teller's crystal ball, a woman levitating in midair, an empty bird cage after a vanishing act, and a bird emerging from a flower. This souvenir sheet brings that same rabbit in the hat design to life in a way no US stamp had ever done before.
Because this souvenir sheet was announced unexpectedly rather than planned in advance, early production ran into some hiccups, and collectors have since found examples with missing perforations and other printing errors from the rush. The sheet was never sold through post office counters, only through USPS mail order and online sales, and the three stamps were issued joined together rather than sold individually. Used examples are notably scarcer than mint ones, since most people who bought the sheet kept it intact rather than using the stamps to mail anything.
