Why the stamp was issued:  To honor the Mississippi River and the impact it has on the state of Louisiana where its path comes to an end.

About the stamp design:  Pictures a photograph of a lit-up bridge and rainbow reflections of light from a cityscape in Louisiana as viewed from the Mississippi River.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue Ceremony was held in Memphis, Tennessee, at Beale Street Landing overlooking the Mississippi River.

About the Mighty Mississippi set:  Includes 10 stamps picturing scenic views of the Mississippi River from the different states it passes through on its way from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico:  Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The designs picture the quiet scenic views of the Upper Mississippi as well as the bustling transportation highway that is the Lower Mississippi.  There’s also a stamp picturing the Great River Road.  This series of connected roads follows the Mississippi River all the way from Minnesota to Louisiana.  One design pictures a vintage steamboat, an iconic symbol of the American South.  There’s also a modern barge transporting goods, an impressive bridge spanning the width of the river, and stunning wetland habitat supported by the river’s floodplain.

The reverse side of the pane of stamps pictures a map of the central United States showing the Mississippi River’s course and its major tributaries.

History the stamp represents:  Approximately 2,340 miles from where it begins at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, the Mississippi River enters the Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans.  The river is a major part of the city’s culture and a must-see for all who visit.

The Lower Mississippi River is home to high bluffs, man-made and natural levees, oxbow lakes, and plenty of wetlands.  Before reaching New Orleans, the Mississippi flows through many other scenic and historic cities.  While each has its charms, none can quite compare to New Orleans.

Every September, New Orleans hosts the Downriver Festival in honor of the Mississippi River.  It celebrates the impact this massive body of water has had on the city with plenty of food, live music, scenic tours, and more.  One especially fun way to enjoy the Mississippi River in New Orleans is by taking a ride on the Riverfront Streetcar Line.  It includes six antique red streetcars that take visitors to several locations along the river.  These include the French Market, Aquarium of the Americas, and more.

It's amazing to think how many outstanding places the Mississippi River travels through from Minnesota to Louisiana.  It truly is one of the United States’ greatest marvels.
