Why the stamps were issued: The pair of 10¢ American Vistas stamps were issued for bulk mailers to pay the Presorted Standard Rate.
About the stamp designs: USPS art director Greg Breeding designed these stamps using artwork provided by DKNG studios. In speaking about them, he said “For Presorted Standard stamps, we like to showcase broadly appealing imagery from across America. These two paintings have a kind of Americana feel by displaying both mountains and the shore, both iconic to the American landscape. Because of their unique design style and use of color, the images come off as very fresh and engaging.”
The beach scene pictures a shore at sunset, with a single sailboat at sea. The mountain stamp portrays a nighttime scene, with a small cabin beside a lake. Both stamps feature the same three colors, with the imagery broken down to its most basic shapes and curves, while still being recognizable.
Special design details: The shape and curves in the water on the mountain scene are similar to the sky on the beach scene. Plus, beside the Moon on the Mountain stamp are Venus and a twinkling star.
First Day City: The First Day ceremony for these stamps was held at the San Diego Stamp Show in San Diego, California.
History the stamps represent: As one of the five largest countries in the world by area, it’s no surprise that the United States offers limitless possibilities when it comes to beautiful scenery. We have it all: mountains, oceans, lakes, sprawling plains, lush green forests... And, in many cases, two or more of those elements can be enjoyed in one area.
One combination that’s sure to send chills down your spine is mountains and lakes. Of course, there are the massive Great Lakes in the northern United States, but there are plenty of others that’ll make a big impression on you, too. Lake Champlain is one example. Situated between New York, Vermont, and the Canadian province of Quebec, this 490-square-mile lake is sometimes called “The Sixth Great Lake.” There are spectacular views to be had on all sides, with the Adirondack Mountains standing proud on the New York shore and the Green Mountains rising up on the Vermont side. It’s a wonderland for all who appreciate breathtaking views.
In addition to its beauty, Lake Champlain also has plenty of recreational opportunities. You can tour historic Revolutionary War-era forts, hike to the top of your favorite mountain peak, enjoy a relaxing boat ride, and more. So, the next time you think about scenic US locales, don’t forget Lake Champlain!
