Why the stamp was issued:  The stamp was issued to honor conservative writer and commentator William F. Buckley, Jr.

About the stamp design:  A 1960s black and white photo of Buckley was artist Dale Staphanos’s inspiration for the graphite and charcoal portrait used on the stamp.

First Day City:  The First Day of Issue ceremony took place at Beinecke Plaza at Yale University, where Buckley graduated in 1950.

History the stamp represents: With a hand resting against his cheek and a glint in his eye, William F. Buckley Jr. didn’t just talk – he charmed.  One of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Buckley brought wit, style, and warmth to political debate.  He made ideas exciting and disagreement feel like an invitation.
Buckley founded National Review in 1955, giving shape and voice to modern American conservatism.  He wasn’t afraid to challenge extremists on his own side, insisting that clarity, not rage, should define the movement.
Many people knew him best as the host of Firing Line, the Emmy-winning TV show he helmed for over 30 years.  With guests across the political spectrum, Buckley made space for real conversations, peppered with sly humor and that famously wide vocabulary.
A devout Catholic, Buckley also wrote over 50 books, including political commentary, memoirs, and even spy novels.  He played the harpsichord, loved sailing, and once ran for mayor of New York City mostly to make a point.
The portrait on this stamp, created by Dale Stephanos, captures his intellect, but Buckley’s true legacy lies in how he made debate delightful and thought contagious.  He didn’t just argue.  He invited America to think.
