Vermont Becomes a Republic
In the decades before the American Revolution, the land that is present-day Vermont was claimed by New York and New Hampshire. Wanting to become a separate colony, representatives of the New Hampshire Grants, which New York was trying to revoke, met in January 1777 to form an independent government, the Vermont Republic. The new republic's constitution was adopted the following July. In March 1778, Thomas Chittenden became the first governor of Vermont. He continued to serve in this position after Vermont joined the Union in 1791 and until his death six years later.
