As the American Revolution continued, the French increasingly supported the cause. It began with supplying arms and money. By 1778, France had sent some of its ships to fight against the British Royal Navy. In 1778, the French tried unsuccessfully to capture Newport, Rhode Island, which was under British control. Two years later, 6,000 French soldiers landed on the beaches of Newport. By this time, the British had abandoned the area. The French established a naval base. The aid offered by the French helped America win the war.
