Own Bicentennial Cover Commemorating the Traitor Benedict Arnold

This Fleetwood cover is part of the Bicentennial Cover collection. Each cover in this collection recalls a major event in America’s fight for independence. The cover bears a patriotic Flag stamp postmarked on the 200th anniversary of the featured event.

Benedict Arnold was a trusted friend of George Washington and the hero of the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. In the months that followed, Arnold thought he was being passed over for promotions and grew dissatisfied. He was also married to Loyalist Peggy Shippen, who was used to living in luxury. She convinced Arnold to begin spying on colonial forces.

Washington maintained his trust in Arnold, even when evidence of his disloyalty mounted. The Commander put Arnold in command of the stronghold at West Point. Arnold used his contacts to forge a plan to turn the fort over to the British. The plot was discovered in September 1780 when a Patriot captured Major John Andre, Arnold's contact within the British military. Andre was hanged, but Arnold escaped. He later joined the British army and fought against his former allies.
