This Fleetwood cover is part of the Bicentennial Cover collection. Each cover in this collection recalls a major event in America’s fight for independence. The cover bears a patriotic Flag stamp postmarked on the 200th anniversary of the featured event.
In the Fall of 1780, British General Cornwallis' army had handed the southern Continental army a string of defeats. Major Ferguson had come to the border between North and South Caroline to recruit reinforcements for Cornwallis. On October 7, 1780, Ferguson's 71st Regiment of Foot encountered the Patriot militia known as the Overmountain Men. The patriots attacked Ferguson's forces near present-day Kings Mountain, North Carolina, as they tried to retreat to Cornwallis' army. An hour into the battle, Ferguson was mortally wounded, and his men surrendered. Though the Overmountain Men were later forced to retreat to avoid Cornwallis' army, the victory at Kings Mountain was a morale booster to the Patriot cause after a series of defeats.
