Cover Honors Founding Father John Blair

Own this cover picturing John Blair (1732-1800).  The 15-Star Fort McHenry stamp is tied to the cover with a Williamsburg, Virginia, postmark.  Blair spent his life in that city.  The cover was postmarked on the 178th anniversary of his death.

Blair joined the cause of American independence after Britain passed the Intolerable Acts.  He helped Virginia create its constitution as a new state rather than a British colony.  He also served as a judge on the state’s Court of Appeals.

Blair was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.  Following the Constitution’s ratification, he was nominated by President Washington to the US Supreme Court.  He retired from this position after five years and returned to his Virginia home.
