Cover Honors Founding Father William S. Johnson

Own this cover picturing William Samuel Johnson (1727-1819).  The 15-Star Fort McHenry Flag stamp is tied to the cover with a Stratford, Connecticut, postmark.  Johnson was born in this city.  The date on the postmark represents the 251st anniversary of his birth.

Wilson was a lawyer in Connecticut and served in the colony's militia where he rose to the rank of colonel.  Though he opposed Great Britain's taxing of the colonies, he had strong professional ties with England.  He opposed American independence, hoping for compromise instead.

Once independence was achieved, Wilson took part in the new government.  He was a delegate to the Constitutinal Convention, where he supported the rights of smaller states like Connecticut, to be equally represented.  Wilson also served as chairman of the Committee of Style, which honed the Constitution to its final form.
