Cover Honors Founding Father Abraham Baldwin

Own this cover picturing Abraham Baldwin (1754-1807).  The 15-Star Fort McHenry Flag stamp is tied to the cover with an Athens, Georgia, postmark.  Baldwin settled in Georgia as an adult.  The date on the postmark represents the 224th anniversary of his birth.

Baldwin was born in Connecticut and studied at Yale College to be a minister.  During the Revolutionary War, he served as a chaplain in the Continental Army.  After the war, he became a lawyer.

Baldwin moved to Georgia and was asked to develop the state's education plan.  He became the first president of the University of Georgia and was instrumental in its establishment.  He was chosen as a delegate the Constitutional Convention in 1787.  After the convention ended, Baldwin returned to his position as college president and was elected to the state's assembly, where he sought additional support for the college.  Baldwin later served in both houses of the US Congress.  He was elected President pro tempore of the US Senate.  His life was dedicated to education and politics.
