Cover Commemorates Opening of National Postal Museum
On July 30, 1993, the Smithsonian's Natinal Postal Museum opened to the public. The same day, the US Postal Service issued four stamps featuring historic moments from three centuries of postal history. The stamp on this cover pictures words written by someone involved in the California gold rush, as well as four famous US stamps, a postmark, and a barcode. The cachet on the cover shows the building that served as Washington's main post office before it became home to the Postal Museum.
