Joint Issue Cover Celebrates US-Canada Friendship

This First Day Cover commemorates the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Peace Bridge that links Buffalo, New York, to Port Erie, Ontario.  Unusual for joint issues, both stamps feature different interpretations of the Peace Bridge.  Each one is cancelled with postmarks from the respective First Day of Issue cities.  The cachet pictures Frank Baird, a Buffalo businessman who has been called the “Father of the Bridge.

Beginning in the 1850s, there had been talks of building a bridge over the Niagara River to connect Buffalo and Fort Erie.  In 1925, an international company was formed to work out the details of financing, constructing, and maintaining the bridge.  The bridge was completed two years later.  It was named the Peace Bridge to commemorate more than a century of peaceful relations between the two nations (beginning at the close of the War of 1812).

This First Day Cover is a fitting tribute to the international cooperation needed to complete the engineering feat that is the Peace Bridge.  Add it to your First Day Cover collection today.
