Beginning in the 1850s, there had been talks of building a bridge over the Niagara River to connect Buffalo and Fort Erie. In 1925, an international company was formed to work out the details of financing, constructing, and maintaining the bridge. The bridge was completed two years later. It was named the Peace Bridge to commemorate more than a century of peaceful relations between the two nations (beginning at the close of the War of 1812).
