These were real pieces of correspondence. Someone folded this paper, sealed it, pressed a stamp to it, and handed it to a postal worker in 1840. It passed through hands, traveled roads, and arrived at a door — and somehow, against all odds, it survived war, loss, and the relentless passage of time to end up here.

A Note on Margins

Penny Black sheets were hand-guillotined with minimal spacing between stamps, which makes well-margined examples harder to come by. Each cover or folded letter offered shows three to four intact margins — placing each example solidly in desirable territory.
