In an all-out effort to increase the use of airmail service, the Post Office Department reduced the rate to 5¢ per ounce. Beginning with this issue, airmail stamps were restricted to exclusive use on mail carried by air and could no longer be used as a substitute for ordinary postage. The design features the beacon light that is atop Sherman Hill in the Rocky Mountains.
