Winged Globe Airmail Stamps Reflect Changes and Growth of Service
This collector’s set of five Airmail Stamps all share the Winged Globe design, but document changes in stamp production, Airmail rates, and the expansion to Trans-Atlantic service. The stamps were all issued in the 1930s. The design pictures the pilot’s wing insignia and the globe, a symbol of flight. All stamps were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
US #C12 was issued on February 10, 1930. It covered the 5¢ rate for letters weighing an ounce or less.
US #C16 was issued August 19, 1931. It has the same design as C12 but was produced on the Rotary Press rather than the flat plate press.
US #C17 was issued on September 26, 1932, in response to an increase in the Airmail rate, which had become effective the previous July.
US #C19 was issued on July 1, 1934. The airmail rate was reduced to 6¢ per ounce on that day.
US #24 was issued on May 16, 1939, in connection with the first Trans-Atlantic Air Mail service flight.
