Including Westward Journey Nickels
This set includes the first two coins in the Westward Journey Nickel series. The coins were issued to honor the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The obverse (tails) side of the coins picture a Peace Medal and Keelboat.
This Proof set also includes a Sacagawea Dollar, five quarters from the 50 State Quarters program and contains the three other denominations produced in 2004. All the proof coins were manufactured at the San Francisco Mint. The small “S” mintmark can be found on each coin.
Proof coin sets are produced by the US mint in San Francisco using a process that brings out the beauty of each coin’s design. The dies and planchets (the metal disks that will become coins) are polished before the coin is struck. This gives the fields (blank areas) a mirrored look and the image a frosted effect. Proof coins are struck twice, giving the coin a sharper design and rims. The proof sets are packaged at the mint and display America’s coins at their best. Each set is only produced for one year, so the supply is limited.
