Bronze Medal Commemorates Montford Point Marines of World War II

This medal was authorized by Congress and produced by the U.S. Mint. It is a smaller version of the Congressional Gold Medal rewarded to the Montford Point Marines. The 1-1/2-inch bronze medal is scarce and collectable. Three-dimensional engraving means every detail is easy to see.

The medal pays tribute to the first African Americans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. They trained at Camp Montford Point in North Carolina. These brave men led the way for more than 19,000 black Americans who served in the Marines. The unit’s dedication to their country was finally acknowledged on June 27, 2012, when the unit was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

The obverse (heads) shows three Marines in different uniforms and the dates 1942-1949. The Marines were integrated after that time. The reverse (tails) pictures Montford Point Marines in formation. The inscriptions read, “For outstanding perseverance and courage that inspired social change in the Marine Corps,” “2011,” and “Act of Congress.”
