Half-Dollar Proof Coin Commemorates 5-Star Generals

In 2013, U.S. Mint released this Half-Dollar proof coin honoring two of America’s five great 5-star World War II Generals: Henry “Hap” Arnold and Omar Bradley.  The mint’s supply of this scarce coin sold out quickly.

Proof coins are minted to check the dies early in the minting process. They are also produced especially for collectors. Struck twice to enhance the design, they shine like a mirror. Authorized by Congress, they’re issued in limited quantities.

“Hap” Arnold is the only American to achieve the rank of general in two branches of the military (Army and Air Force).

Omar Bradley led the 12th Army Group consisting of over 900,000 men, the largest group in American history to serve under one commander.

The reverse of the coin pictures the heraldic crest of Ft. Leavenworth, home of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College where Arnold and Bradley were students.
