Elvis was one of the music industry’s most charitable artists. Over the years, he made several donations of more than $50,000 each to local charities. Elvis also did a number of benefit concerts, the most memorable of which raised$62,000 to help fund the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii, honoring those killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Elvis used his celebrity to raise awareness of causes such as childhood polio by recording several public service announcements for the March of Dimes. He made the largest single donation up to that time to the Motion Picture Relief Fund and twice donated wallabies (gifted to him by fans in Australia) to the Memphis Zoo.
In 1971, the King of Rock and Roll was given an award that he considered the most meaningful he had ever received. On January 16, the Junior Chamber of Commerce of America (known as “the Jaycees”) gave awards to the men they considered the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation. The award was for individuals who were distinguished in their professional fields. Elvis Presley was one of them. The keynote speaker at the awards luncheon was the United Nations ambassador-appointee – a man named George H.W. Bush – the future President of the US.
After the awards luncheon, Elvis hosted a reception at Graceland. He gave tours of the mansion to the award winners and Jaycee officials. This award was significant to The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll because it meant that his peers accepted him and they recognized his contribution as a humanitarian. The Jaycee award was the only one that Elvis carried with him on his travels.
Elvis’ charitable legacy lives on today through the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation. Among their works are Presley Place (which provides homeless families with rent-free housing) and the Elvis Presley Music Room (which offers children in Presley Place the chance to discover music).
