Network Television Debut
This coin commemorates Elvis’ January 28, 1956, appearance on the Dorsey Brothers Stage Show. Elvis and his band began rehearsing for their first national TV appearance five days earlier in Memphis. Elvis and manager Colonel Parker flew to New York City a couple of days before the show, staying at the Warwick Hotel.
On the program, Elvis performed “Shake Rattle and Roll / Flip Flop and Fly” and “I Got a Woman.” Although he was relatively unknown at the time, one serviceman stationed in New Jersey recalled, “I often went on Saturday nights to the Dorsey Brothers show and I was there when Elvis Presley made his national debut on that show. I had never heard of him and was startled when he appeared on stage and hundreds of girls began screaming.”
