While Elvis was filming Frankie and Johnny, he donated $50,000 to the Motion Picture Relief Fund. The donation was the largest individual donation to the fund’s building and endowment drive up to that time. Movie and TV actress Barbara Stanwyck, singer and actor Frank Sinatra, and comedian Bud Abbott were on hand to accept the donation on June 10, 1965.
The relief fund was created in 1921 to help actors and others in the entertainment industry. Their mission statement is “We take care of our own.” In the 1940s, the Motion Picture and Television Country Home and Hospital were built, and Elvis’ donation helped the work continue. The fund has expanded over the years to include assistance with health care, retirement, and child care.
