Most Successful Album
As you know, Elvis put his singing and acting profession on hold for a while to serve his country overseas in the US Army. When he returned to the U.S. in 1960, he starred in the movie G. I. Blues. The plot loosely follows Elvis’ experiences while stationed in Germany. The film grossed $4.3 million (equal to more than $36,000,000 today) and was nominated for the 1960 Best Written American Musical award.
This coin pictures Elvis’ image from the soundtrack album cover, which was also a huge success – it spent 111 weeks on the Billboard album chart. It was nominated for two Grammy Awards, including Best Vocal Performance Album, Male. Elvis’ signature song, “Blue Suede Shoes” was re-recorded for the soundtrack. The album was certified Gold in 1963 and Platinum in 1992. Platinum means one million records were sold.
