Elvis Receives Five Gold Records at Once

This coin commemorates a string of Elvis concerts at the Houston Astrodome that broke the venue’s attendance records. The shows also marked his first public appearance in 10 years. Elvis arrived in Houston February 25, 1970, held a press conference, and then checked into the Astroworld Hotel.

Over three days, Elvis performed six concerts to sold-out audiences. The Saturday matinee was the Dome’s largest-ever afternoon crowd – totaling over 34,000. And that evening’s performance was attended by over 43,600 screaming fans – the most people ever to attend a show at the rodeo. In all, over 300,000 fans attended the Elvis shows that weekend.

Following his last performance, Elvis held a press conference where he was given a gold Rolex from the Houston Livestock Association for breaking the Dome’s attendance records. Valued at $2,500, Elvis’ watch was number 343. Elvis and the Colonel were also presented with plaques naming them lifetime members of the show. Among the other gifts Elvis received were a gold Deputy Sheriff’s badge and a Stetson hat.

There was another reason for the press conference. RCA Vice President Loginestra was there that day to give Elvis five gold records. They were for “In the Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Cry Daddy,” and the albums Elvis at the International and From Elvis in Memphis. This was reportedly the first time any artist received five gold records at once
