Quartet Makes Music History

On December 4th, 1956, Elvis dropped in to the Sun Records studio to find Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins in a recording session.

Carl Perkins had a hit with “Blue Suede Shoes” the previous year, and was struggling to keep his momentum going. Jerry Lee Lewis had just signed with Sun Records, and Johnny Cash was a virtual unknown when the four sat down for a jam session.

Sam Phillips had his engineer start taping when the four artists began to play. The result was an album of gospel, rockabilly, and soul that some have called “The Holy Grail of Rock and Roll.” They would be dubbed the Million Dollar Quartet.

Looking back, Perkins recalled the phenomena that surrounded Elvis. “This boy had everything. He had the looks, the moves, the manager, and the talent. And he didn’t look like Mr. Ed like a lot of the rest of us did. In the way he looked, way he talked, way he acted – he really was different.”
