First Post-Army Recording
This coin you’re commemorates Elvis’ first recording session after
coming home from his Army service. After two years in uniform, Elvis was officially discharged on March 5, 1960. Two weeks later, he boarded a bus to Nashville, Tennessee, headed to RCA Studio B.
On the first day of recording, March 20, Colonel Tom Parker and a few RCA representatives were in the studio to make sure Elvis still “had it” after being away for so long. It didn’t take long for them to realize they had nothing to worry about. Backed by Scotty Moore, Floyd Cramer, D.J. Fontana, and The Jordanaires, Elvis explored new styles. Going beyond the Rock ‘n’ Roll he’d sang the previous decade, his new songs included doo-wop, gospel, blues, and jazz.
Of the songs recorded over the first few days, “Stuck On You” and “Fame and Fortune” were rushed to be released as singles. “Stuck On You” debuted at number 84 and reached number one in just three weeks.
The album that resulted from these sessions, Elvis is Back!, would eventually peak at number two. Elvis also declared it was one of his favorite albums he ever recorded.
