Farewell to a Rock Legend

This coin honors the untimely passing of Elvis on August 16, 1977.  His sudden death stunned the world.

Presley was just 42 years old when he died of a heart attack.  He had been found in his beloved Graceland home.  An estimated 25,000 fans, family members, and friends traveled to Elvis’s home to pay their final respects for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  Additional crowds lined the streets from Graceland to the Forest Hill Cemetery where he was buried next to his mother.  When thieves tried to steal Elvis’s body later that month, his remains, along with those of his mother, were exhumed and reburied in the Meditation Garden at Graceland.

Jimmy Carter, who was President at the time, released this official statement: “Elvis Presley’s death deprives our country of a part of itself.  He was unique, irreplaceable.  More than twenty years ago, he burst upon the scene with an impact that was unprecedented and will probably never be equaled.  His music and his personality, fusing the styles of white country and black rhythm and blues, permanently changed the face of American popular culture.  His following was immense.  And he was a symbol to people the world over of the vitality, rebelliousness and good humor of this country.” The impact of Presley’s music and showmanship are still felt today.”
