Blue Christmas

“Blue Christmas” is one of Elvis’ most popular holiday songs, Written by Billy Hayes and Jay W. Johnson, it was first recorded by Doyle O’Dell in 1948. Several other artists recorded and popularized the song over the next few years, but Elvis’ 1957 recording made it a holiday staple. Elvis recorded the song on September 5, 1957 for his first holiday record, Elvis’ Christmas Album. Released that October, the album spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. Eventually selling over 13 million copies, the album was Elvis’ first to receive Diamond Certification from the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). It’s also the bestselling Christmas album of all-time.

Though Elvis recorded the song in 1957, it wasn’t released as a single until 1964, when it was paired with “Wooden Heart.” “Blue Christmas” reached number one on the Billboard Christmas Singles chart. It also reached number 11 on the British singles chart.

“Blue Christmas” was again released as a single the following year, this time paired with “Santa Claus is Back in Town.” That time it reached number four on the Billboard Christmas Singles chart. A holiday classic, the song has re-entered the Christmas and Holiday singles charts several times in the years since.
