Eddie Fisher Watches Memphis Concert
The Cotton Carnival opened in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 15, 1956. Part of the carnival was Bob Neal’s Cotton Picking Jamboree, held at the Ellis Auditorium. The biggest artist performing that night was a young Elvis Presley. Over 7,000 people packed into the auditorium for what was later called his “triumphant homecoming.” Presley, who had lived in Memphis for much of his life was now a national star. His song “Heartbreak Hotel” had soared to the top of Billboard’s Top 100 chart and he had appeared on national television. The expectant audience got the performance they desired and showed their appreciation for Memphis’s famous son.
Among the thousands of adoring fans, Eddie Fisher watched Presley’s performance. As a singer himself, Fisher also drew crowds of adoring fans. He had his own television series, as well. He appreciated Presley’s concert and connection with the audience as few others sitting in those Ellis Auditorium seats would have.
