Early on, US officials expected a high casualty rate. Saddam was notorious for using chemical weapons on his own people, so they knew how dangerous this war could be. Army medical units were deployed in two phases in addition to the medical staff of individual combat divisions. Over the course of the war, some 23,000 medical personnel treated and evacuated wounded soldiers.
