James Madison was the President who led the nation to victory in the War of 1812.  He served as President from 1809 to 1817.  The Napoleonic Wars were raging in Europe, and the US tried to remain neutral.  Britain used its Navy to prevent American trade with France, compelled US seamen to serve in the Royal Navy, and armed the Native Americans in the West, who attacked settlers.  Diplomatic efforts to stop the British were unsuccessful.  President Madison asked Congress to declare war against Great Britain, and the War of 1812 began.

On August 24, 1814, a large British force of 4,000 marched toward Washington, DC.  Most of the population fled, but not President Madison and his wife, Dolley, who stayed at home.  The President then accompanied the American forces to meet the British outside the city.  When it was clear the Americans couldn’t hold off the British, the President sent a message to Dolley.  She reportedly fled by carriage, taking with her the full-length Stuart painting of George Washington, torn from the White House wall.

When British troops entered the White House, they found the dining room table set for forty guests, and a feast in the kitchen.  After the troops had enjoyed a fine meal, the soldiers set fire to the White House.  The fire destroyed the interior of the White House, but the outside walls were left standing.

America built up its Navy with ironclad ships that captured many British vessels.  The US took control of Lake Erie and threatened British ships in the Atlantic.  After two years, the trade restrictions were lifted and the Royal Navy no longer forced American sailors to serve.  Because the United States gained victories against the powerful British Empire, the US gained a new sense of national unity after the war.
