Stay Away, Joe
Elvis’ first film released in 1968 was the comedy western, Stay Away Joe. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Dan Cushman, this fun and lively movie includes parties, fights, and of course, song. A slim and tanned Elvis plays Joe Lightcloud – a happy-go-lucky native American rodeo star – who returns to the reservation to raise cattle. Presley was joined by over 100 Navaho who had parts in the movie, which was filmed in Sedona, Arizona. Elvis’ wife, Priscilla, was also there, marking one of the few times that she accompanied him to a movie location. One of the movie’s songs, “All I Needed Was the Rain,” was also sung by Elvis in his “Elvis ‘68 Come Back Special,” considered by many to be his most substantial achievement as a stage performer.
