Major General Horatio Gates (1927-1806).  Born in England, he had fought for the British Army in the French and Indian War.  Frustrated that his military career wasn’t advancing, he emigrated to the Colonies in 1769 and bought a plantation in Virginia on the recommendation of his fellow French and Indian War veteran, George Washington.

In 1775, Gates heard of the outbreak of the Revolutionary War and offered his services to Washington.  The Continental Congress commissioned Gates as a brigadier general.  He helped organize the fledgling army and the following year was promoted to major general.  In June 1776, Gates was given command of the Canadian Department, which was retreating from Quebec to Fort Ticonderoga.  He commanded the defense of the fort and nearby Lake Champlain.

In 1777, Congress gave Gates command of the Northern Department.  On August 19, the British attempted to invade Saratoga, but Gate’s forces repelled the attack and gave the Continental Army a significant victory.

Gates became a controversial figure in the war when he campaigned to replace Washington as Commander in Chief.  His attempts failed, but Gates was president of the Board of War, essentially making his Washington’s superior.  This conflict of interest and his plot to usurp Washington was discovered, and he was removed from the board and assigned to the Eastern Department in late 1778.

In 1780, Charleston, South Carolina fell into British hands.  Gates was then ordered to command the Southern Department.  He suffered a great defeat at the Battle of Camden and was criticized for riding over 170 miles away from the battlefield shortly after the defeat.  Gates’s military reputation was ruined.  He remains a controversial figure of the American Revolution.
