Surprisingly affordable CSA #12 is a piece of Civil War history you can hold in your hands. You’ll notice the postally used stamp costs slightly more than the unused stamp. That’s because it’s remarkable a postally used stamp survived the Civil War and almost 150 years!
CSA #12 was printed by two different firms between 1863 and 1864 – the height of the devastating war. The 10¢ denomination paid the letter rate for all Confederate mail. Its engraved design pictures the Confederacy’s president, Jefferson Davis.
Because of the Union blockade, high quality ink was scarce and paper quality varied. CSA#12 was printed in shades of blue and green.
