Native American $1 Coin Honors Military Service of Native Americans

This coin pays tribute to the brave Native Americans who have served in every American conflict since the Revolutionary War.  The five stars on the coin represent the branches of the US military.  The eagle feathers were traditionally given for bravery in battle.  They are cherished by Native Americans.

Native Americans have served in greater proportion to their population than any other ethnic group in the US.  During World War I, 12,000 Native Americans served, and three out of four of them were volunteers.  In the Second World War, five Native Americans received Medals of Honor for their courageous actions in combat.  In addition, Code Talkers were used during both wars to send messages that were not able to be decoded by the enemy.

About the $1 Native American Coin Program:  In 2009, the US Mint began issuing $1 coins in accordance with the Native American One Dollar Coin Act.  Each coin pictures a portrait of Sacagawea on the "heads' side and a special yearly design on the "tails" side.  They honor the contributions of Native Americans throughout US history, whether it be individuals or larger communities.
