Native American $1 Coin Honors Ely Samuel Parker, General Grant’s Military Secretary

This coin commemorates Ely Samuel Parker, a Seneca Indian who served as General Ulysses G. Grant’s military secretary.  Parker is pictured in his military uniform.  His tribe and Native American name are also shown on the coin

Parker (1828-1895) grew up on Seneca lands that are now part of New York State.  He spoke his native language and English fluently and became a civil engineer.  Parker was an interpreter and diplomat for the Seneca nation in its dealing with the US government.  While working on government contracts in Illinois, he met Ulysses Grant.  When the Civil War started, Parker tried to join the army but was rejected because he was an Indian.  He contacted Grant, who was short on engineers, and joined him in Vicksburg.

Parker continued to serve alongside Grant and was appointed his military secretary.  When Robert Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865, Parker helped draft the surrender documents.

After the war, Parker remained in the Army and negotiated treaties with southern tribes who had supported the Confederacy.  When Grant was elected president, he appointed Parker his Commissioner of Indian Affairs, the first Native American to fill this position.

About the $1 Native American Coin Program:  In 2009, the US Mint began issuing $1 coins in accordance with the Native American One Dollar Coin Act.  Each coin pictures a portrait of Sacagawea on the "heads' side and a special yearly design on the "tails" side.  They honor the contributions of Native Americans throughout US history, whether it be individuals or larger communities.

This coin is a fitting tribute to Ely Samuel Parker.  It will make a neat addition to your collection.  Order yours today.
