 Danish West Indies Stamps...
Exciting Ties to the Past

The name Danish West Indies triggers images of  mighty sailing ships moving across exotic tropical shorelines.  Now you can make this intriguing period of history a part of your collection with a stamp from the Danish West Indies.

Today the Danish West Indies are called the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Long before these islands became U.S. possessions they were (as the name implies) settled and claimed by Denmark.  The Danish West Indies consisted of the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.  With the exception of two periods in which the islands were surrendered to the British during the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815), Denmark controlled the islands until they were sold to the United States for $25 million in 1917.

In 1927 Congress passed legislation which made the people of the Virgin Islands full U.S. citizens.  All adults able to read and write in English were given the right to vote in local elections in 1936.  Congress voted for the establishment of a legislature there in 1954.  In 1958 the first native-born governor was elected.

With your love of stamps and history, I know you’ll enjoy adding this stamp from the Danish West Indies to your collection.  Place your order today and add all this romance, history and fun to your hobby hours.
