Once a British colony, the Cape of Good Hope was first settled by the Dutch, who ceded it to the British in 1814. In 1910, the Union of South Africa was formed by this colony and three others – Natal, Transvaal, and Orange River Colony. From its first stamp issue in 1853, until 1900, the Cape of Good Hope issued only 95 stamps. Of special interest are two stamps in its last set. They were issued in Mafeking. They honored General Robert Baden-Powell, who fought against the Dutch at Mafeking during the Boer War (1899-1902). Baden-Powell went on to found the Boy Scouts.
