Attempting to prevent the reuse of stamps, inventor Henry Lowenberg patented his invention, which he called “decalcomania.” Lowenberg printed stamps on transparent onionskin paper and then applied the adhesive to the printed side. The design showed through the paper for legitimate use – but remained “stuck” like a decal to the envelope if the stamp was removed.
