The prestigious firm of Toppan, Carpenter & Co. worked with the Philadelphia Bank Note Company to produce dies for a 3¢ Washington stamp essay. The design wasn’t used – until 1903, when enterprising Ernest Schernikow purchased the dies in a bankruptcy sale. He created these striking reprints to show various steps in stamp production.
