Mint Stamps Honor Pope Benedict's First World Youth Day

Benedict's predecessor, Pope John Paul II, had created World Youth Day in 1985 as a gathering for young people from around the globe every two to three years.  In August 2005, Benedict XVI had been Pope for just four months when he attended the 20th World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany.  It was his first time at the festival as well as his first foreign trip as Pope.  He joined the festival from August 18 to 21, delivering inspirational words, meeting the German president, and visiting the Roonstrasse Synagogue, which had been destroyed during World War II and later rebuilt.  He ended the festivities delivering his closing speech in front of an estimated 1 million people.
